Discovering Your 'I Am': The Key to Unlocking Your True Purpose

We often hear about the importance of finding our "why"—that driving force that gives our lives meaning and direction. But before we can fully step into our purpose, there is an even more foundational question to answer: Who am I? 


Understanding your "I am" is the beginning of living authentically and embracing your true power. In this blog post, I want to guide you through the process of discovering your "I am" before your "why," and why this journey is essential.


Why Your "I Am" Comes Before Your "Why": Many of us are eager to define our purpose and understand what we are meant to do in life. But how can we know our true direction if we don't first understand who we are? Your "I am" is the foundation—the core essence of who you are, beyond the roles you play or the titles you hold.


Think of your "I am" as your starting point. If you try to set a destination without understanding where you are, you risk feeling lost, disconnected, and unfulfilled. By defining your "I am" first, you build a strong foundation from which your purpose can naturally grow.


Defining Your "I Am" Statements: Creating your "I am" statements is a powerful exercise in self-discovery. These statements are not about what you do; they are about who you are at your core. They are affirmations that remind you of your true nature, especially in moments of doubt or uncertainty.


Take a moment and ask yourself:

  • When do I feel most like myself?

  • What qualities do I value most deeply in myself?

  • What do I bring to the world that is unique?


Based on your reflections, write 3-5 "I am" statements. For example:

  • "I am resilient." This means you have the strength to overcome challenges.

  • "I am compassionate." You value kindness, towards yourself and others.

  • "I am worthy." Worthy of love, success, and happiness—simply because you exist.


Embracing All Aspects of Yourself: Once you've defined your "I am" statements, it’s time to embrace them fully. This means accepting all of who you are—both the strengths and the perceived flaws. Often, we hide parts of ourselves because we believe they are not good enough. But true power comes from embracing everything about yourself, even the parts you struggle to accept.


Connecting Your "I Am" to Your Purpose: When you truly know your "I am," your "why" becomes clearer. Imagine trying to build a house without a solid foundation—this is what happens when we chase our purpose without knowing ourselves first. By defining and embracing your "I am," you create a strong base from which your purpose can emerge naturally, aligning with your true self.


Daily Affirmations and Breath Work: To connect more deeply with your "I am," consider incorporating daily affirmations into your routine. Repeating your "I am" statements each day helps reinforce your sense of identity and builds confidence. You might also try a simple breath work exercise to ground yourself and find calm before reflecting on your "I am."


Your "I am" is your truth. It’s the foundation upon which your purpose—your "why"—is built. Take time each day to remind yourself of who you are, beyond the labels and the roles. When you know your "I am," you can live in your power with clarity, authenticity, and strength.
